2006 acm fellows

The 2006 ACM Fellows were announced recently, it’s great to see many familiar names on the list; whose research work I’ve read and enjoyed:

  • Surajit Chaudhuri: DBExplorer(BANKS competitor), and a bunch of other DB/IR stuff.
  • Gerhard Weikum: Loads of algo stuff, lurrve his probabilistic Fagin merge paper!
  • Jennifer Widom: Personalized PageRank, Topic-sensitive PageRank, amongst other things.

In case you were wondering, my advisor is an ACM Fellow too :)

Windows Vista SideShow

The Vista “SideShow Platform”:

The Windows Vista SideShow platform will also enable hardware manufacturers to build auxiliary displays in a wide range of peripheral devices such as keyboards, LCD display casings, remote controls, and cell phones. These devices can then display information received from a Windows Vista-based PC, providing even more convenience to your everyday computing.

Probably the only thing they didn’t copy from Apple. I like it, because it makes a lot of sense. Combine this with E-Ink displays, and Optimus keyboards, and we’ve got a winner.

captcha for 4.7

Just put up the form-API based captcha.module for Drupal. Go get it! (of course, i’m assuming you’re running Drupal 4.7 / Drupal HEAD; because otherwise this is of no use to you.)

mitch hedberg

Discovered Mitch Hedberg via Anuj’s band website :

“An escalator can never break; it can only become stairs. You would never see an ‘Escalator Temporarily Out Of Order’ sign, just ‘Escalator Temporarily Stairs. Sorry for the convenience.’”

new years resolution

Ok, so let’s get this done with:

  • I promise to not consume carbonated beverages in 2006.
  • I promise to not consume chocolate or candy products in 2006.
  • I promise to waste my time swimming instead of thinking about swimming.
  • I promise to be nice to the fairer sex. I’ve heard this has its benefits.
  • I promise to be more proactive about my research.
  • I promise to give a sincere shot at Learning Spanish.

Is there anything you think I should or should not be doing? Leave a comment, I’ll think about it.
