a voice of four octaves

Anuj introduced me to the late Jeff Buckley — this was the first time I heard a firang doing a Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan cover, that too with a Telecaster. I really liked these words by him:

There was a time in my life not too long ago when I could show up in a cafe and simply do what I do, make music, learn from performing my music, explore what it means to me, i.e. have fun while I irritate and/or entertain an audience who don’t know me or what I am about. In this situation I have that precious and irreplaceable luxury of failure, of risk, of surrender. I worked very hard to get this kind of thing together, this work forum. I loved it and then I missed it when it disappeared. All I am doing is reclaiming it.

of questionable characters

I don’t have the time at the moment to speak of my encounter with the illustrious PornoB, so I’ll just point to Gaurav’s post, which isn’t very different from what I would write.

Drupal insanity

1. Drupal infrastructure goes down
2. I am offline for the weekend, missing all the action.
3. Dries sets up temporary page, asking for donations for a new server, that would cost near USD $3000.
4. Donations trickle flood in, $6000+ collected in 13 hours!!
5. Current donations update: $9282 USD from 217 people.
6. Take an average: That’s 42 dollars per person!! Amazing.

update: is back up.

the real reason for a social network service to exist

Battelle reveals:

In fact, if 360 has hooks that let developers feed data in, and pull data out, it may well become the first social networking platform with a killer app beyond getting laid – and that app will be search.

IRC madness

Insanity on #drupal:

(19:50:56) bertboerland is now known as spambot (19:51:08) You are now known as spamassassin (19:51:38) ***spamassassin throws grenade at spambot (19:51:47) spambot is now known as KA-BOEEEEM (19:52:02) spamassassin: Mu hahahaha

This is what happens to developers when you cut off their mailing lists, CVS and bugtracker.

Drupal downtime

It’s a freak coincidence, Drupal, Drupaldocs and Drupaldevs are all down right now. Note that is down for scheduled maintenance, and has not been hacked or taken down or anything*. They’re changing the powerlines at the server room or something, and it’s just taking a little longer than expected.

Drupal versions <= 4.6.1 (and a bunch of other PHP apps) have a security problem which makes them vulnerable to code injection, which means bad people can do bad people to your website. To solve this, all you need to do is go to and download the latest patched version. Since the site is down at the moment, here’s a temporary fix:

1. delete in the includes directory.
2. upload a blank file in its place.

This should keep you safe from attacks, but will disable the, etc. “ping” notification, and the blogapi. You can later update the files when is back up.

thats the way you do it

Nice quote, via Kriti:

Kisses blown are kisses wasted,
kisses are not kisses unless they are tasted,
kisses spread germs and germs are hated,
so kiss me baby, I’m vaccinated!

Brown skinned firangs

Somebody at work spoke up today, “What’s with so much news and attention about the London attacks; when no one really cared much about the terrorist attack at Ayodhya just two days ago?”

War of The Worlds Review

Watched War of the Worlds yesterday. Impressions just after watching the movie:

What crap!!!

Impressions after sleeping over it:

  • I expected more good, mindless fighting.
  • The “human” touches were often incongruous.
  • The ending scene was improbable, illogical, AND sucked.
  • Some scenes wont make sense unless you’ve read the book.

Ok, so I’m being very critical here; but this is a Spielberg movie with Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning in it, so it’s perfectly alright for me to have very high expectations, which Spielberg met in only in a few scenes (for example the one involving the car).

Final verdict: Go watch the movie, but leave your expectations outside the theatre please.
