aural voyeurism

Muxtape is “a simple way to create and share mp3 mixtapes”. Reminds me of Webjay.

Mixtapes are public, and it’s interesting to look into people’s collections and stumble upon some rather wonderful pieces of music (this has a cost though; some of the japanese midi electronica was jarring).

In the the first mixtape I clicked on, I found a song called “Com’è profondo il mare”, an Italian song written in 1977 by Lucio Dalla, which I’ve fallen in love with.

My multilingual friend Esha translated the Italian lyrics for me and graciously allowed me to share them with you:

Ci nascondiamo di notte
We were born in the night.
Per paura degli automobilisti
For the fear of the drieer.
Degli inotipisti
In the highway.
Siamo i gatti neri
We are black cats.
Siamo i pessimisti
we are pessimests.
Siamo i cattivi pensieri
We are prisoner of our thoughts.
E non abbiamo da mangiare
We don’t have anything to eat.
Com’è profondo il mare
How deep is the sea.
Com’è profondo il mare
How deep is the sea.

Babbo, che eri un gran cacciatore
We were a big character
Di quaglie e di faggiani
Caccia via queste mosche

Che non mi fanno dormire
That they don’t get sleep
Che mi fanno arrabbiare
So they become angry at me.
Com’è profondo il mare
How deep is the sea.
Com’è profondo il mare
How deep is the sea.

E’ inutile
It is not useful.
Non c’è più lavoro
There isn’t any more work.
Non c’è più decoro
There isn’t any more things.
Dio o chi per lui
for god or for him.
Sta cercando di dividerci
They are looking to divide you.
Di farci del male
They are looking to do you bad.
Di farci annegare
they are looking to anhilate you.
Com’è profondo il mare
How deep is teh sea.
Com’è profondo il mare
How deep is the sea.

Con la forza di un ricatto
With the force of an army.
L’uomo diventò qualcuno
The man divides whoever.
Resuscitò anche i morti
Resucitates whoever is dead.
Spalancò prigioni
Open wide the prison.

Bloccò sei treni
Block their trains.
Con relativi vagoni
Con their relatives in their wagons.
Innalzò per un attimo il povero
Enhance for the moment the poor.
Ad un ruolo difficile da mantenere
And a rule that is difficult to maintain.
Poi lo lasciò cadere
Thus,we leave everything to fall.
A piangere e a urlare
To paint is a sceam.
Solo in mezzo al mare
Only in the middle of teh sea.
Com’è profondo il mare
How deep is the sea.

Poi da solo l’urlo
then you can be alone in your screams.
Diventò un tamburo
They became a drum.

E il povero come un lampo
It is the poor who are like a lamp.
Nel cielo sicuro
Without a secure roof.
Cominciò una guerra
begining a war.
Per conquistare
to conquest.
Quello scherzo di terra
That which they lost of the earth.
Che il suo grande cuore
that is their grade cure.
Doveva coltivare
Wherever they can cultivate it.
Com’è profondo il mare
How deep is the sea.
Com’è profondo il mare
How deep is the sea.

Ma la terra
But the land
Gli fu portata via
Was taken away.
Compresa quella rimasta addosso
Compress whatever remains here.
Fu scaraventato
They had scavanged.
In un palazzo,in un fosso
In a palace, and a
Non ricordo bene
they don’t remember well.
Poi una storia di catene
then a store of the captive.
Bastonate
Beat them.
E chirurgia sperimentale
It was an experimental surgery

Com’è profondo il mare
Com’è profondo il mare

Intanto un mistico
How mystical.
Forse un’aviatore
could be an aviator
Inventò la commozione
Invented a comotion.
E rimise d’accordo tutti
that remained there for all.
I belli con i brutti
the beuatiful with the ugly.
Con qualche danno per i brutti
for whatever you can give the ugly.
Che si videro consegnare
whatever you can see.
Un pezzo di specchio
a slice of the mirror.
Così da potersi guardare
with things from which they could have guarded.
Com’è profondo il mare
how deep is the sea….
Com’è profondo il mare

Frattanto i pesci
meanwhile, the fish.
Dai quali discendiamo tutti
From what descended to all.
Assistettero curiosi
Aided in their curiosity.
Al dramma collettivo
The drama of the collective.
Di questo mondo
In the world’s quest.
Che a loro indubbiamente
Doveva sembrar cattivo
E cominciarono a pensare
Nel loro grande mare
Com’è profondo il mare
Nel loro grande mare
Com’è profondo il mare

E’ chiaro
Che il pensiero dà fastidio
Anche se chi pensa
E’ muto come un pesce
Anzi un pesce
E come pesce è difficile da bloccare
Perchè lo protegge il mare
Com’è profondo il mare

Certo
Chi comanda
Non è disposto a fare distinzioni poetiche
Il pensiero come l’oceano
Non lo puoi bloccare
Non lo puoi recintare
Così stanno bruciando il mare
Così stanno uccidendo il mare
Così stanno umiliando il mare
Così stanno piegando il mare
