lazy or crazy?

In the lab that I work, I sit on a machine that has no speakers. Hence, to play songs, I use a machine that has speakers - a desktop located about 2 metres behind me. If I were a normal person, I'd just walk up to the machine and play my songs from there. If I were to think that the music is too loud, I'd just walk up to the speakers and turn the volume down. But instead, here's what I did:

ctrl+alt+t to open a terminal

ssh compbehindme

xmms&

(noticing that it's too loud)

yahoo vs google

Yahoo dumps Google. They're powered by their own search engine now, thanks to the acquisitions the made last year. It's amusing to see how the browser wars have turned out. In the very beginning, we had the following players:

Altavista - One time leader in the websearch engine. Commited harakiri by tranforming into a portal, among other things.
AllTheWeb - Indexes a LOT of pages. I used it for pages I couldn't find anywhere else. But that's about all I used it for.
Yahoo - Search, mostly dependent on the then-huge human-managed directory. Plus points: search quality, and portal features.

yeahright

Like this is going to work: Pizzas without bread! (Well, considering the number of stupid diet-people around, it actually might.)

barred ista

I was a big admirer of the Barista coffee chain. When it opened, I became a huge fan of it's themed decor, clever copy for it's ads, and it's range of coffee concoctions. Barista was also probably the first restaurant chain in India to introduce the "laid back" approach - allow your customers to hang around your joint, spend time playing scrabble on the board you provided, or strumming the guitar that's lying at the corner of every one of your stores. While this might seem to make little business sense, this became the chain's primary customer-drawing points. In the hustle bustle of this hectic world, it was nice to find a place to let your hair down and treat yourself to a walnut brownie dipped in extra chocolate.

break fast!

To all those who were partying at my disappearance, sorry guys, I'm back. Again. I'm not really so busy that I have no time to write - as a matter of fact there's so much that I want to write, I don't know what to write first.

We'll start with the TechFest. As I had written in my last post, I had planned to be a silent spectator to the event. But I guess fate had other plans. So they made me sit in the KReSIT auditorium, where the IT Quiz was announced as an open, no-registration-required event. Then they made me sit right next to a Hrishikesh from COEP, Pune; who thus became my partnere de-facto. The prelims were a dissapointment; there was so much that I had forgotten / knew wrong. Nevertheless, the two of us managed to score the highest marks, and went ahead to the finals.
