the girl of my dreams

Part One of a series

I'm sitting in my favourite place at the restaurant, and suddenly this heavenly body starts walking in my direction, smiling at me. Long, dark hair; twinkling eyes... dark blue full sleeved turtleneck top, coupled with a denim asymmetric. A dozen thin, silver bangles that move up and down as she walks... She comes up to me, and sits down in the chair near me.

"Hi Arnab... How are you? Can you help me out? I'm having problems with the client server architecture for this web app - I was wondering if we could sit and you could help me work out the scalability issues..."

beautiful day

The weather's wonderful nowadays. They should declare days like these as national holidays so people can enjoy.

By the way, they're nominating rockstars for the Nobel Prize. Interesting approach. Maybe I should start practising the flute again...

February 18th

good bad ugly

Oh man, I'm tired... Life is just so hectic these days. Let's try categorizing them:

Good: The TV's back. 2 days after it going kaput, Dad opened it up on the dining table, used the vacuum cleaner to suck out all the dirt, and replaced the fuse wire that had blown. Some of the advantages in life when your father is a news-and-cricket-hungry electronics engineer.

My birthday was a really cool day. My cousin sister called up all the way from Salt Lake City in the US - it was so cool to talk international! Then many other calls came in, IM messages popped up all over my computer screen. Woke up in the morning with a very happy mood (this doesn't happen too often), and Mom gives me a really sweet geeky birthday card. I come back after brushing my teeth, and there's a huge chocolate cake on my table! Mom had kept it in the fridge, and I hadn't noticed! Well, I got dressed and stuff, and blew out 20 candles. It was almost like blowing out an entire bush fire in one breath. Man, I feel old. Then I had cake and Payesh for breakfast. In the evening, went to Ashish's place, and from there we went to a school reunion / Valentine's / general party. We reached "fashionably late" (that's supposedly what people call 10:30 in the night). It was fun meeting all my school friends again.

oh dang didly doo!

Google buys Pyra! This is major. Ev, Jason and the gang rollerblading in the GooglePlex... hmm.

Everyone seems to be wondering why this happened - as in, what use is a content hosting service to a search company?
A lot of people are saying that there's going to be a "Blogs" tab now, beside the News and other tabs. Some people are also wondering if Blogspot sites will get a better pagerank.

But why buy Pyra? Why not just get 20 people to build Blogger in a month? Here's what I think: It's all about the data™. In Page and Brin's paper - The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine - the base assumption was that the WWW is a huge interlinked connection of information. And you know what's incredibly funny? The Blogosphere is just that - a small scale WWW.

I blew up the TV today. Well, ok, so it wasn't exactly a massive explosion that sent me hurtling through the air waving my hands and feet. I pressed the power button, and there was this spark inside, not unlike that of a fuse blowing up. All I did was press the button that says 'on'. And it's not switching on anymore. Hmm. Have to break this news to my parents. I wonder how my dad (world cup and news) and mom (soaps) are going to take it.

Anyway, my birthday is in three days, that is the 14th of February. I am sure everybody is getting ready with their gigantic gifts and stuff that I had hinted in my previous posts. I really love you all.

dee lay

Sorry for the sudden drop in frequency of weblog posts. Life has never been more event-packed, and there's so much stuff that I'd probably have to write out 3-4 huge entries to tell you about it. So that's what I'm going to do. The reader is requested to wait till then.

While you're waiting, what you can do is look for a good gift to get me on my twentieth birthday. I mean, it's 7 days away - don't you think a guy moving out of his fun-filled teenage years needs some things to help him in this cruel Real World? Maybe the new Mercedes S Class... or a Gold plated Nokia Communicator...

The Columbia, NASA's oldest shuttle broke up during the landing phase. The astronauts on board the shuttle were:

This entry in Douglas Bowman's weblog is about how Douglas observes a fascinating optical illusion. This entry in my weblog is about how Douglas describes this entire experience in a single fascinating hundred and eighty eight word sentence.

pee arr

Kiruba and Codey point to this interview about PR & Blogging. Though the article is meant for large companies with minimum online presence, even small projects can become PR successes using blogs. I've made so many friends on the net by just searching and reading rants/reviews about blogsnob and then commenting on the blogposts.

Also, I think blogging teaches you how to communicate more effectively and cleanly. For instance, we got this email some time ago from an AdSystem customer:

This program doesn't appear to do what we need... Can you please let me know if this program will do what we want and if not, how to get a refund.
